Description

A plat of the early outline of the square from a Sanborn map of Downtown Tyler as it shows what the area looked like in May of 1885. It shows where the courthouse and the streets around it were as well as the other major county buildings.  This was included in an article published within our Chronicles of Smith County many years ago, written by Morris Burton for the 3rd volume and it was so popular as a simple pullout that extra copies were made.  The white shadow outline of the future 1909 courthouse and lawn bandstand are imposed as well.  Four brick buildings surrounded the courthouse and were used as the tax office, etc.  That courthouse in the center had originally been built in 1850 and was updated and added on to in 1876.

The map is 17″ x 11″.
